While We Look The Other Way
I was scrolling Facebook killing time
Waiting for a call from a friend of mine
Saw a post about tariffs for the hundredth millionth time
I had to turn off my phone
So I picked up my guitar
Decided to write about some of the things
That brought us all this far
Here in Alberta
I can hardly read the news
They tell us we want coal mines
Now I’m just confused
Cause I remember voting
I’m sure that I said no
I’m sure a lot of us agreed
Not on Alberta soil
Do we know how fragile freedom really is
When governments don’t listen
It don’t get worse than this
When power and corruption
Are the flavour of the day
And we all watch
Our hopes and dreams
Slowly slip away
And what the hell is with these licence plates
That no one even wants
Just another way to distract us
Just another way to keep us lost
What about the teachers and the nurses, the doctors and the cops
Why can’t we pay them what they’re worth
Why don’ they just get lost
I am not a separatist
Danielle, you don’t speak for me
Even tho I voted for ya
That’s no longer in the cards you see
You’ve broken all the trust I had
In democracy
You’re out of control
I think the people finally see
You can believe in what you want to
That’s okay by me
I promise I wont hate you
If we disagree
That’s why we get to vote
At least that’s the way it is today
Till they change the rules
While we look the other way
Do we know how fragile freedom really is
When governments don’t listen
It don’t get worse than this
When power and corruption
Are the flavour of the day
And we all watch
Our hopes and dreams
Slowly slip away
